As partners of RESCEU, we were involved in the fight against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a disease estimated to have caused in 2019, 33M infections worldwide in children under five, leading to 3.6M hospital admissions, 26 300 in-hospital deaths and 101 400 RSV-attributable deaths, mainly in low and middle income countries.

RESCEU's legacy
The RESCEU project developed robust evidence on RSV disease burden and economic impact published in The Lancet and other high impact journals; created a sustainable Europe-wide multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder community from academia, public health, scientific societies, patient organisations, regulatory agencies and industry; and provided the infrastructure to perform future pivotal trials for RSV vaccines and therapeutics.

PROMISE, another Innovative Medicines Initiative, continued RESCEU's legacy to advance RSV research and pave the way for RSV immunisation and surveillance in Europe. Today, with the introduction of preventive solutions in most western countries and increased awareness, health systems have registered a dramatic decline in RSV hospitalisations during the winter months.
