This week, a major milestone has been achieved by the PREMIER Project: the launch of its innovative Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) database for pharmaceuticals. This new resource marks the first phase of PREMIER’s goal to create a Digital Assessment System (DAS) that will transform the management of the environmental impact of medicines.
What is the PREMIER Database?
The PREMIER database is a novel system designed to identify and address environmental risks associated with pharmaceuticals. It consolidates ERA data from regulatory authorities, industry, and public literature, providing stakeholders with transparent access to a large collection of reliable data in one place.
Why is this important?
Environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals requires extensive data on their behaviour and toxicity in the environment. By bringing this information together, the PREMIER database enables science-based, transparent decision-making for a healthier environment. Future updates will include additional data and a risk assessment module, evolving the platform into a comprehensive DAS.

This achievement reflects the strength of collaboration between academia, industry, and regulators within the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) (predecessor to Innovative Health Initiative) project PREMIER.
